Since 2018, The People’s Budget Long Beach campaign has forced conversations and action for equity and justice in the Long Beach city budget. Because Black, Latinx, Cambodian, Filipino, White, and other members of the community came together, Long Beach started reversing historic patterns of disinvesting in communities of color. From funding for language access, to a youth strategic plan, to universal legal representation for immigrants, the people have proven we know how to make our communities safe and healthy.
On September 27, 2021, Manuela “Mona” Rodriquez, an unarmed 18 year old teen, was shot by a Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) School Security Officer (SSO). She has since succumbed to her injuries. It took weeks of community protest until SSO Eddie F. Gonzalez was investigated for the murder, and also took days of community pressure for the school district to fire him from his position.
We believe race and income shouldn’t determine anyone’s future in Long Beach. In our community, everyone should be safe, connected, and healthy.
Be part of creating a healthy Long Beach with low-income communities of color. Let’s build community knowledge, leadership, and power!
